Outsiders Various Art (OVA) first appeared in 1996 and in 2001 opened the “13 Tsubo Art Center” in Sakuragicho. Its focus is on children, the young poor, the disabled and social minorities including non-Japanese living in Japan. Various projects have been launched based on the relationships between these people, including exhibitions, film screenings, cafés, parties, concerts and workshops. The issue of “survival” and the issue of “expression” are considered side by side and the question of what art can do in a context of a complex social reality is explored and then put it into practice in everyday life. On the surface OVA appears to be relaxed and random but underneath a definite strategy exists.
Wang Jian Wei has produced a diverse range of work from conceptual art and installations to video, theatre and opera. Much of his work critically questions the relationships that have arisen between people due to modernization including the extinction and continuity of spaces that are public and those that are private, or the effects of language and power. Although his video work adopts a documentary format that attempts to convey a sense of reality, its dramatic production and language are unique. In his work Hostage, he depicts, without using words, the reality of workers who support the urban change that has occurred in Chinese society in recent years.

This blog was originally started with the intention to feature our 'green' initiative in creating awesome and fascinating lighting sculptures using all parts of the plastic mineral water bottles. We hope to inspire people from all walks of life to view and re-think about using plastics in a different manner instead of just treating it as waste.
Selected artists of interest will also be featured on this blog to provide a wider range of artistic ideas from different fields.
DESIS is a network of schools of design and other schools, institutions, companies and non-profit organizations interested in promoting and supporting design for social innovation and sustainability. It is a light, no-profit organization, conceived as a network of partners collaborating in a peer-to-peer spirit. It is articulated in several DESIS-Local (that are sub-networks within a specified local area). DESIS-International is therefore the framework where the different DESIS-Local coordinate themselves and where some global initiatives are taken.
DESIS-China aims to actively support design initiatives and projects in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability in China. That is, in the fields of the ecological reconversion of production and consumption systems, the social construction of services, and the balanced development of local areas. (more)
Good Ideas Salons are where forward-thinkers come together to share ideas to make things better, whether that’s better work, better play or a better world. Drawing from a range of industries, Good Ideas Salons bring together people with a focus on lateral thinking, the desire to showcase their knowledge, and the wish to renew existing relationships with likeminded peers as well as forge new ones.
On October 20, PSFK and Nissan will host a Good Ideas Salon in Tokyo. For the event, Piers Fawkes (PSFK) will moderate a conversation on “Pure Living” with two panels of distinguished guests. We’ll explore perspectives on pure living and how it is currently manifesting itself in design, technology, urban living, and transportation.

bike rides explores the increasing relevance of bicycles in contemporary art and culture.
as worldwide trends point to bike riding as a sustainable means of transportation and a way
of reshaping the city, the curiosity and use of bicycles is rapidly growing. from avid bike riders,
amateurs, recreational bikers, artists and designers, the community at large is reconsidering bicycles
through their personal point of view: their own ideal bike. bike rides is a multidisciplinary exhibition
which features bikes which have been reappropriated to represent different identities
and serve new functions.
in his project 'aerialbikeway', brazilian artist jarbas lopes addresses the commuter's experience.
for lopes, bikes function as social sculptures in which people can reconsider bike transportation
as a source of enjoyment. he finds cycling achieves a balance between the technology of the body
and that of movement.
There are many "spots" and "spaces" in the city that are always visible yet have never been considered for their potential meaning and functions. On the other hand, there are people who focus on such elements, and evolve economic activities there full of creativity. This lecture aims to review the megalopolis "Tokyo" through what the city had abandoned.
This is an official event for the Japan International Contents Festival.
A series of special forums will be presented by today's hottest professional creators and artists. Ten professionals who lead each industry will give a live talk show each day for three hours, describing the experiences which led to their current success, and their perspective on each of their professions. This special event aims to inspire the creative minds of the future.
All the talks will be in Japanese only.
Taking their opening of offices in the Tokyo Midtown complex as an opportunity, the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization, the Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., and Kyushu University Faculty of Design are embarking on a new activity that underscores their respective features, yet is collaborative at the same time. The conceptual image associated with this collaboration overlaps with that of a wheel that moves Japanese design, ways of life and industry, as well as society as a whole, forward. We therefore named the locus of this activity the Design Hub.
We intend to use this hub as a means of linking Japan and the world, as we go forward in developing the future of design.
